Updated for Army Directive 2026-13

Army Height and Weight Calculator

The new army height and weight calculator for the 2026 standard — and the only one that runs both: the new waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) for serving Soldiers, and the full AR 600-9 height weight table plus tape test for anyone joining at MEPS.

Check Your Standard

Feet and inches, measured in stocking feet.

At the belly button, after a normal exhale. Tape level, snug, not compressing.

Age, sex and weight no longer matter here

Under Army Directive 2026-13 the army body composition standard is one universal number — waist ÷ height below 0.550 — for every Soldier in the Regular Army, Army National Guard and Army Reserve.

This is an independent reference tool, not an official Army system and not medical advice. Your unit's recorded measurement is the one that counts.

How the New Army Height and Weight Calculator Works

Two standards now run at the same time, so the tool asks one question before it asks for measurements: are you serving, or joining? Everything after that follows from the answer.

  • Serving — it runs the waist-to-height ratio from Army Directive 2026-13, truncates to three decimals the way the Army records it, and shows your target waist and your exact margin.
  • Joining — it runs the AR 600-9 screening table for your height, age band and sex, and if you are over it, carries you into the circumference tape test that actually decides accession.
  • Either way — nothing is sent anywhere. The arithmetic happens in your browser and the numbers are gone when you close the tab.

How to Calculate the New Army Height and Weight

If you would rather do the arithmetic yourself, the new standard takes about thirty seconds. There is no table to look up and no formula to memorise.

  1. Work out which standard appliesServing Soldiers use the waist-to-height ratio. Applicants at MEPS still use the old height and weight table with a tape test behind it. Everything below is the serving standard.
  2. Measure your heightIn stocking feet, head level, to the nearest half inch.
  3. Measure your waist at the navelTape level and parallel to the floor, snug against the skin without compressing it, read at the end of a normal exhale. Take three readings and average them.
  4. Divide waist by heightBoth numbers in the same unit. Inches or centimetres both work, because the result is a ratio rather than a measurement.
  5. Cut it at three decimal placesDo not round. The Army disregards the digits after the third, so 0.5509 is recorded as 0.550.
  6. Compare against 0.550Below 0.550 meets the standard. Exactly 0.550 does not — the rule is less than, not less than or equal to.

Worked example: a Soldier 70 inches tall with a 38-inch waist gets 38 ÷ 70 = 0.542. That passes, with half an inch of margin before the line at 38.5 inches.

01Which Army Standard Actually Applies to You?

This is where almost every other page on the internet gets it wrong right now. There are two separate army height and weight standards running at the same time, and which one applies depends entirely on whether you have already shipped.

Do not let the "rescinded" headlines confuse you

The height and weight tables were rescinded for serving Soldiers. They were not rescinded for accession. If you are still an applicant, the MEPS height and weight requirements and the tape test are exactly what you will face, and the tables further down this page are the ones to plan against.

The split happened because two different instructions govern the two populations. In-service fitness and body composition fall under DoD Instruction 1308.03, which is what the Department changed when it pushed the waist-to-height ratio across the Joint Force from 1 January 2026. Accession medical standards fall under DoD Instruction 6130.03, which the WHtR change did not touch. The Army simply went further than the other services: Army Directive 2026-13 made WHtR the sole authorised method and removed every fallback that used to exist.

02What Changed on 7 July 2026

Army Directive 2026-13 was signed by the Secretary of the Army on 1 July 2026 and took effect on 7 July 2026. It is the biggest rewrite of the Army Body Composition Program in roughly forty years, and it did three things at once: it retired the screening tables, it retired every version of the tape test, and it removed the fitness-test exemption that a lot of Soldiers had been relying on.

The 180-day review window

The Army announced a 180-day assessment of the new standard to validate accuracy and decide whether adjustments are needed. During that window, no Soldier is being separated for a WHtR failure. A failure still means flagging and enrolment in the ABCP — it is not a free pass — but the separation clock is paused until the review closes and further guidance is issued. Counting from 7 July 2026, that review runs into early January 2027.

Why the belly button, and why 0.55

Abdominal fat is the fat most strongly associated with cardiovascular and metabolic risk, and a waist-to-height ratio of 0.5 to 0.55 is one of the most consistently validated screening thresholds in civilian medicine. The Army's stated reasoning was alignment with medically validated practice. The practical side effect is that the old workaround of bulking the neck to game the tape formula no longer does anything — neck circumference is not in the calculation any more.

03Target Waist by Height (WHtR Reference Table)

This is the number serving Soldiers actually need. Because the standard requires a ratio strictly below 0.550, your waist has to come in under the figure shown, not match it. The ratio is recorded to three decimal places with no rounding in your favour: 0.549 passes, 0.550 fails.

HeightHeight (in)Waist must be belowIn centimetres

Taller than 6'8"? The ratio has no upper bound — multiply your height in inches by 0.55 for your own figure, or just use the calculator above.

04AR 600-9 Height and Weight Table (MEPS & Accession)

If you are joining, this is your table. It is the weight-for-height screening table from AR 600-9, broken out by sex and age band, and it is still the figure a recruiter screens you against. Being over the maximum is not a disqualification on its own — it just moves you to the body fat tape test, which is the second gate.

Male — maximum allowable weight in pounds, by height and age (AR 600-9 Table B-1)
HeightMin weight17–2021–2728–3940+

Over 80 inches tall: add 6 lb per inch for men, 5 lb per inch for women. Falling below the minimum weight triggers a referral for medical evaluation rather than a pass.

Maximum Allowable Body Fat (Table B-2)

If you exceed the weight for your height, the tape test decides it. These are the limits that apply at that second gate.

Maximum allowable percent body fat by age group
Age groupMaleFemale
17–2020%30%
21–2722%32%
28–3924%34%
40 and older26%36%

The formulas behind the tape test

The Army does not use a generic body fat estimate — it uses two specific circumference equations. The calculator at the top of this page runs exactly these:

  • Men: % body fat = [86.010 × log₁₀(abdomen − neck)] − [70.041 × log₁₀(height)] + 36.76
  • Women: % body fat = [163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck)] − [97.684 × log₁₀(height)] − 78.387

All measurements go in inches. Men are taped at the neck and at the abdomen across the navel. Women are taped at the neck, at the natural waist — the narrowest point, usually about halfway between the navel and the bottom of the sternum, which is not the same site men use — and at the hips.

05How to Measure Your Waist Correctly

At the 0.550 boundary, half an inch of sloppy tape work is the difference between a clean record and a flag. Measuring badly at home is worse than not measuring at all, because it gives you a false sense of where you stand.

  1. Use the right tapeNon-stretch fibreglass, a quarter to half an inch wide. Cloth tapes stretch with use and will quietly flatter you by a half inch or more over time.
  2. Find the navel, not the narrowest pointFor the WHtR standard the site is the belly button, level and parallel to the floor. The narrowest-waist site is a different measurement used in the old female tape test.
  3. Arms down, stand naturallyPosition of attention, not rigid. Arms at your sides, shoulders relaxed and not hunched.
  4. Measure at the end of a normal exhaleDo not suck in and do not push out. Breathe out naturally and read the tape at the bottom of that breath.
  5. Snug against skin, no compressionThe tape should touch the skin all the way round without denting it. If you can see an indentation, it is too tight.
  6. Take three readingsMeasure three times in sequence and average them. If one reading is more than an inch off the others, take a fourth and average the three closest.
  7. Keep conditions constantSame time of day, same hydration, same clothing. Waist size genuinely moves through the day — comparing a morning reading to an evening one tells you nothing.

If you are close to the line

The safe path and the effective path are the same path: steady strength work, enough protein, regular sleep and consistent measurement so you can see a real trend. Dehydration, fasting and sweat suits before a weigh-in do not change your actual ratio in any lasting way and carry real health risk. Treat your target waist as a planning number, not a deadline.

06What Happens If You Are at 0.550 or Higher

🔁

Confirmation Test

A reading at or above 0.550 is followed by a confirmation measurement on the same duty day, carried out by a different team. That has to happen before your commander takes any action.

🚩

Flag & Enrolment

If the confirmation also fails, you are flagged and enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program, and you stay enrolled until you meet the standard.

⏸️

No Separations Yet

During the Army's 180-day review of the new standard, no Soldier is separated for a WHtR failure. The flag still carries real consequences for promotions and schools.

📋

Recorded on DA 5500

Results are recorded on DA Form 5500 and entered in ATIS by leaders. DA Form 5501, the old female form, was discontinued.

Commanders can also direct a WHtR assessment at any point outside the twice-yearly cycle if they have a concern about a Soldier's compliance, so the scheduled assessment is a floor rather than a ceiling.

If you want support, Military OneSource offers free, confidential fitness and nutrition coaching to service members and their families around the clock.

07How the Other Services Compare

The waist-to-height ratio is now a Joint Force standard, but the Army is the only service that made it the sole method. The thresholds also differ.

In-service body composition standards by branch, 2026
BranchWHtR thresholdStill uses body fat %?
ArmyBelow 0.55No — WHtR is the sole method
Marine Corps0.52 or belowYes, as a secondary path
NavyAround 0.55Yes, as a secondary path
Air Force / Space Force0.55 or belowYes — part of the Fitness Assessment

Applicants to every branch are still screened at MEPS under DoDI 6130.03, not WHtR.

08Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Army height and weight standard in 2026?

For serving Soldiers it is a waist-to-height ratio below 0.550 — waist measured at the navel, divided by height, both in the same units. Army Directive 2026-13 made this the sole standard on 7 July 2026. For applicants at MEPS, the older height and weight table plus a body fat tape test still applies.

Is the Army height and weight table still used?

Not for Soldiers already serving — those tables were rescinded on 7 July 2026. They are still used at accession, which is why this calculator keeps them live rather than archiving them. If you are joining, the AR 600-9 table on this page is the one your recruiter will screen you against.

Is the Army tape test gone?

For in-service body composition, yes. Army Directive 2026-13 rescinded the circumference tape test in every version and barred DXA, InBody and Bod Pod scans from being used to challenge a WHtR result. The tape test still exists at MEPS for applicants who exceed the screening weight for their height.

Do age and gender still affect the Army standard?

Not for serving Soldiers. The 0.550 threshold is universal — no age brackets, no separate limits for women. That is a complete break from every previous version of AR 600-9. At accession, age bands and separate male and female columns still apply.

Does a high AFT score still exempt me from body fat assessment?

No. The fitness-test exemption was removed by Army Directive 2026-13. Fitness and body composition are now assessed completely independently, and a strong Army Fitness Test score earns no credit toward your WHtR result.

How is the Army waist-to-height ratio calculated?

Divide your waist circumference by your height, using the same unit for both. The result is truncated to three decimal places — digits past the third are disregarded, not rounded. A 70-inch Soldier needs a waist below 38.5 inches to stay under 0.550.

How often will I be measured?

Twice per calendar year. Your commander can also direct an assessment at any time if there is a concern about compliance, so the twice-yearly cycle is a minimum.

What happens if I fail the WHtR standard?

A failing reading triggers a confirmation measurement the same duty day by a different team. If that also fails, you are flagged and enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program until you meet the standard. During the Army's 180-day review of the new standard, no separations are being processed for WHtR failures.

Does this calculator apply to the National Guard and Army Reserve?

Yes. Army Directive 2026-13 applies the same WHtR standard to the Regular Army, the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve.

What is the maximum weight to join the Army at 5'10"?

Under the AR 600-9 screening table, a 70-inch male applicant can weigh up to 180 lb at 17–20, 185 lb at 21–27, 189 lb at 28–39 and 192 lb at 40+. A female applicant of the same height can weigh up to 174, 176, 178 and 181 lb across the same bands. Exceeding those figures sends you to the tape test rather than disqualifying you.

How do you calculate the new army height and weight?

Divide your waist measurement at the navel by your height, using the same unit for both, then cut the result at three decimal places without rounding. A figure below 0.550 meets the standard. Weight and age are no longer part of the calculation for serving Soldiers.

How is the new army height and weight calculator different from the old one?

The old one looked your weight up against a table for your height, age band and sex, then sent you to a tape test if you were over. The new one does neither. It takes two measurements, divides them, and compares the result to a single threshold that is the same for every Soldier.

What are the new army height and weight standards for 2026?

A waist-to-height ratio below 0.550, measured twice per calendar year, applied identically to the Regular Army, Army National Guard and Army Reserve. Army Directive 2026-13 made it the sole authorised method on 7 July 2026 and rescinded the screening tables, the tape test and every supplemental body fat assessment.
